Lasers used in aesthetics are specifically attracted to a chromophore, or a colored target, selectively heats and destroys it while sparing the surrounding tissue. This accomplishes the aim with minimal collateral damage. As an example, in laser hair removal, the laser is attracted to melanin which is the chromophore present in the hair follicles, generates enough heat energy and destroys the target.

This heat energy from the laser that is harmful for melanin in the hair follicle can also heat up the melanin pigments in the skin with resultant skin burn. Sciton uses 1064nm long pulsed Nd:YAG as the laser of choice for hair removal. This penetrates several millimeters deep and delivers the heat energy for the intended target of the hair follicle, bypassing the more superficial melanin.

Another interesting feature used in the Sction laser is the method of cooling. Some equipments use a cooling copper plate for pre-cooling and the operator quickly moves and fires the laser at the pre-cooled skin and once again steps backwards with the cooling plate to cool the heated skin. That is a lot of tap dancing with hardly any progress! You can also imagine the operator fatigue working under these conditions. Yet another company uses a spray of cold solution, a cryogen, just before the laser fires, and it sprays again just after. This system also has the potential for injury by possible block of the nozzle or the coolant running dry in the canister.

Sciton has cleverly introduced a technology wherein cold refrigerated fluid passes between two sapphire plates of the scanner which bulk cools the skin deeper and in a non-selective manner. The laser fires through the sapphire plate and hence the skin is protected before, during and after the laser firing . If the tubing that brings the refrigerated fluid gets kinked for some reason, a loud alarm alerts the operator and laser does not fire. You cannot beat that for safety.

If pain is induced in a sequential manner, as in laser hair removal, the nerve endings (neurons) at the skin about to be treated next, will go in a heightened state of alert. This is called ‘neuronal recruiting’ and is the reason for worsening pain as the treatment progresses. The engineers at Sciton came up with a unique solution to address this issue. The built in computer fires the laser through the scanner in a non-sequential manner, thereby not giving a pattern for the brain to anticipate pain. A series of 25 non-sequential shots can be fired precisely with no spaces or overlapping, within a matter of few seconds. No human hands can match this feat!

Exactly 50 years ago the first laser was invented. In 1963, Dr. Goldman reported injury to hair follicles using laser. It took another 20 years, in 1983, Dr. Anderson and Parrish were the first to introduce the theory of selective photothermolysis. By applying this theory, it was possible to selectively destroy the target without affecting the adjacent tissue. This was the birth of the aesthetic laser industry.

In 1995, FDA approved the use of laser for hair removal. After many hiccups along the way, more and more lasers were introduced for hair removal including Ruby (694nm), Alexandrite (755nm), diode (800nm) and eventually, the long pulsed Nd-YAG (1064) laser.

Due to burns, hypo and hyper pigmentation and other complications, the Ruby laser fell out of favor. Alexandrite and diode are still being used effectively but the complication rates in Fitzpatrick skin type of IV, V, and VI are prohibitive and are not meant for use in those skin types. The long pulsed Nd:YAG (1064nm) is the only laser that can be safely used in all skin types.

Sciton, a company based in Palo Alto, CA, chose to use 1064 nm laser in its platform. Along with other safety features, Sciton makes one of the safest and most effective aesthetic laser equipments ever. Clinique Esthetique has carefully chosen this laser equipment to offer the most sophisticated treatment with least amount of discomfort for its discriminating clients. Visit us to learn more about Botox Cosmetic, laser hair removal, acne and acne scar treatments, cellulite reduction, microdermabrasion, and more.
